So it feels like the Wizards leave money on the table by running an offense where Beal never sets a screen. When a guy with a versatile jump shot (like Beal, Duncan Robinson, Herro, or Curry) is a willing screener, it puts a lot of pressure on the defense to communicate exceptionally well and rotate or switch on a string. But there were opportunities in semi-transition and when the defense was scrambled where him setting a screen would've been effective. This is not 100% his fault, as the Wizards offense often puts Beal in the right corner and he receives a pin-down into a DHO, he's essentially receiving two screens and then makes a decision with the ball as he curls. He didn't set one screen in the first half. Now, let's talk about the negatives, which is unfortunately the focus of this post.ฤก. Guys who can shoot like this put way more pressure on the defense than a guy who needs to be spotted up and have his feet set to shoot the ball, like a Jae Crowder. He's one of those rare guys who can get into the air and then get his mechanics settled while he's in the air, which is a really useful skill for a shooter who flys around pindowns and only has a second of open space. He doesn't need to walk into an open shot with the same 1-2 footwork, he doesn't even need to seem to be on balance or have his feet set. He can make the lefty sling pass, the pocket pass, he looks off defenders, and the fact that he's a willing and good passer in the PnR is incredibly useful, because he's such a good jump shooter and defenders lunge at him, even in the midrange, because of the threat of his jump shot. I didn't know Beal had become such a good PnR ballhandler. Not a full Wizards game where I follow the ball and listen to the commentary - a full game where I muted the tv, watched Beal exclusively at both ends, and hit rewind on any Wizards defensive breakdown* or relevant offensive play Beal was involved in. I just watched a full game of Bradley Beal vs the Nets.
